Welcome to Black Cat Studios...  We are a photo-to-chart needlework service that designs custom cross stitch kits from your original photographs and computer graphic files.  Our symbol charts may be created from any subject matter ranging from a favorite pet photo to photos of the new home you have just moved into, to your favorite portrait of a relative.  The possibilities are endless!

Why Black Cat Studios?

WHAT SETS BLACK CAT STUDIOS APART FROM THE REST OF CROSS STITCH DESIGN SERVICE COMPANIES?

Our mission is to create each design order in a way that is representative of the original design, with the help of each customer.  We are in touch with our customers.  During the design process, we work together to create a design that both the client and Black Cat Studios is proud of.  We NEVER send out a completed custom design without the client’s approval of the draft design first.

Some potential customers simply shop on price alone.  There is a difference between a kit designed by another company for a price of $15.99, and a custom kit designed by our company for $45.00.  Many times, the “cheaper” design company only does a literal photo to chart conversion.  No design manipulation or expertise is needed.  This company simply imports the image, and the colors fall where they may.

Hillary Rodham Clinton Commission

We don’t usually toot our own horn, but just this once...we wanted to let you know that a “famous needlework artist” who wishes to remain anonymous commissioned us to design a custom cross stitch kit for her.  She used our cross stitch chart and stitched the design in needlepoint, her specialty.

Our CUSTOM DESIGNED KITS can be ordered in two ways:

A standard kit incorporates the cross stitch design chart which includes the DMC equivalent symbol chart on it, a floss chart which shows how many stitches of each color is used in the custom design and gives the calculation so you will know how many skeins of each color will be needed, a design page that shows what your design will look like in cross stitch.  Design time is included in this price as well.

A complete kit incorporates all of the above from the standard kit (the cross stitch design chart which includes the DMC equivalent symbol chart on it, a floss chart which shows how many stitches of each color is used in the custom design and gives the calculation so you will know how many skeins of each color will be needed, a design page that shows what your design will look like in cross stitch.  Design time is included in this price as well.)  In addition, this kit includes Aida, Linen or Evenweave fabric in the count size that the customer requests and all DMC floss colors necessary to complete the design.

Order and Organization

I don't know about you, but it is always a challenge for me to keep my cross stitch kits and supplies organized so that I can easily find things while working. Here are a few ideas to manage your supplies more efficiently:

  •  Use a large binder with loose leaf floss insert pages (these may be purchased at any craft store) to manage your floss. Start with the lowest DMC number and arrange all cards of floss by increasing number.
  • When keeping floss on the skein, you can also purchase fabric pouches and organize them by color or by DMC floss number.
